New GTA 6 Image Suggests Late 2020s Timeline

A leaked image of Grand Theft Auto 6 has ignited fans’ theories about the game’s timeline. The developers, Rockstar Games, have been quiet about any details involving GTA 6’s plot and release details and have stuck to the original teaser and image leaks. However, one image previously leaked is not notable because of what is occurring instead of what is sitting in the background.

GTA 6 Teaser

In the background there is a sleek, angular gaming console sitting next to a modern television alongside what appears to be a matching controller. The design did not match any version of any console Sony or Microsoft currently have available (or at least available to the public), leading many to believe the console located in the image is a next-generation system and/or possibly a fictitious version of a PS6. With Sony’s rumored PS6 release window, between 2027-2028, it fueled speculation that perhaps the game will take place in the late 2020s.

Fans Are Wondering if the Image’s Console Could Be PS6

The tech-heavy setup with skinny TV bezels and vlog-style imagery on the TV screen supports a near-future vibe, and Rockstar has a history of putting real-life fashion, media, and technology trends into their games, so it seems reasonable to interpret these elements as clues for either a post-2025 year setting or at least a convergence of time since Rockstar’s messaging is mostly set in a specific culturally relevant period for each of its GTA games.

But the image of the console does not mean the game is in that era; some fans believe the image is possibly of a later chapter in the game. This would fit Rockstar’s narrative style since in GTA 5 there is a time jump, and Red Dead Redemption 2 ‘s epilogue is set years after the main story.

Either way, it’s clear Rockstar is once again building a believable world rooted in a particular period. With GTA 6 expected in 2026, the design of the console could be both a narrative detail and a smart way to future-proof the game’s aesthetic for years to come.
