iPhone 17 Air: Apple’s Slim New Design for 2025

Even though the iPhone 16 has not yet been released completely, rumors are buzzing about the iPhone 17 lineup. If the rumors are to be believed, 2025 could show one of the biggest iPhone adjustments since 2017’s iPhone X.

The biggest headline? There’s going to be a brand-new model called the iPhone 17 Air. In addition to design changes, Apple is rumored to be making changes to the displays and price adjustments across the board. Here’s everything we know so far.

Four New iPhone 17 Models in 2025

Apple is expected to release four models next year:

  • iPhone 17
  • iPhone 17 Pro
  • iPhone 17 Pro Max
  • iPhone 17 Air

What’s not coming back is the iPhone 17 Plus. Apple appears to be dropping the Plus line due to low popularity. The new iPhone 17 Air will not replace the Plus model directly but will sit in the middle of the lineup as a new option.

iPhone 17 Air: Slimmer, Larger, and New

We believe the iPhone 17 Air will be the most exciting version of the iPhone lineup, which may feature;

  • 6.6-inch display
  • A very thin chassis, possibly below 6mm thick
  • New camera arrangement
  • Design removal not seen since iPhone X

This variant will be likened to the MacBook Air or iPad Air from Apple’s other product lines. It will be thinner and more elegant than the rest, possibly targeting consumers who desire something thinner and fancier, but don’t want the Pro version.
Display Sizes

Here’s how the iPhone 17 lineup is shaping up by size:

  • iPhone 17: May stay at 6.1 inches, or increase to 6.3 inches
  • iPhone 17 Pro: 6.3 inches
  • iPhone 17 Pro Max: 6.9 inches
  • iPhone 17 Air: 6.6 inches

This makes the iPhone 17 Air the middle child of the bunch—larger than the base model, smaller than the Pro Max.
Pricing and Positioning

When first rumored, the iPhone 17 Air was thought to be a high-end. New updates suggest otherwise.

Currently, the rumors are  that the iPhone 17 Air will launch at a price between the standard iPhone 17 and the 17 Pro and Pro Max. This gives it a mid-range option in the iPhone 17 line and replaces the footprint that the Plus model used to fill but will have a more attractive design, look, and feel.
Always-On Display? Still Uncertain

LTPO technology does also allow for always-on displays. however, it has yet to be confirmed whether all models of the iPhone 17 will get always-on displays or if it will stay a Pro feature.

If Apple move to introduce always-on screens in all models then that is a significant change, as it brings yet another premium feature to non-Pro users.
Design and Camera Changes

The iPhone 17 Air isn’t just about being thinner. It’s also getting a new camera design, though details are still unclear. This could involve a new placement, fewer bumps, or other layout updates.

Apple is also expected to continue refining the look of the Pro models, but the Air could be the standout in terms of visual changes.
New Colors Coming

Apple is notorious for updating its color options on an annual basis, and 2025 will continue this tradition. One source hints at a light blue color for the iPhone 17 Pro based on the M4 MacBook Air. Apple has always brought fresh and fashionable colors to its complete lineup, and expect them to continue this trend with new seasonal colors from now on to attract new buyers.
What to Expect Overall

If these rumors hold true, the iPhone 17 lineup will look like this:

  • A new model (iPhone 17 Air) with a thin, sleek build
  • ProMotion and 120Hz displays for all models
  • Display sizes ranging from 6.1″ to 6.9″
  • Possible always-on display for more models
  • A fresh camera design for the Air
  • Updated color options
  • A shift in pricing strategy, especially with the Air model

Final Thoughts

2025 could be the year of the iPhone. The iPhone 17 Air could usher in a whole new world of design and usability. Performance, portability, design, Apple seems to be making an iPhone for everyone.

Apple will probably release the iPhone 17 series in September 2025, so expect more leaks and confirmations in the months leading up to the release. Stay tuned—this could be the largest upgrade to the iPhone in a long time.
