Elon Musk Officially Steps Down from White House Role

Elon Musk’s days working at the White House are over.

Elon Musk is officially finished with his advisory position in the Trump administration, which he announced formally on May 29, 2025.

Why Elon Musk Exits the White House?

Musk wants to take the time to focus on the work he does at his companies, (Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI). Musk enjoyed the position as a Special Government Employee, head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

Musk’s time in office was problematic mainly because he wanted to cut government spending. All his plans were met with opposition, including a lawsuit. Musk’s relationship with the White house had soured, especially after Musk publicly criticized a proposed new tax. Musk reiterated his support for DOGE’s mission, and thanked Trump for the opportunity to serve.

Musk’s exit, which comes amid increasing political tensions and public scrutiny, follows his previous investments of time and money into Trump’s 2024 campaign and is viewed as an action to dissociate from politics and re-enter the commercial space.

Although Musk may no longer have an official role, there might continue to be some influence from his participation in efforts the last few years. Musk has indicated a desire to remain an adviser to the administration on an informal basis. Regardless, his exit signals the conclusion of a controversial chapter in his participation in U.S. government.
