Google I/O 2025: What’s Coming Next in AI, Android, and Beyond

Google I/O, the largest developer event of the year, is on the horizon.
Google’s biggest developer event of the year, Google I/O 2025, will take place from May 20 to 21 at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California. This year’s conference is expected to spotlight updates across Android, AI, wearables, and possibly even social media.
Google also ran a completely separate “Android Show.”
The Android Show: I/O Edition had the wraps come off Android 16, with a breakdown on the new Material 3 Expressive interface. Updates on security and more focus on Gemini on how it will work on a host of other devices.
By breaking Android news out into its virtual event, Google can have much more time in the I/O keynote, quite possibly time to discuss Gemini, Deep Mind, Android XR, and Project Astra. This is going to be a packed event, so here’s how you can watch I/O 2025 as it happens, and what we can expect .
What Announcements We Expect From Google I/O 2025
Fingers crossed for upcoming major Google updates. Let’s find out what’s coming our way:
More About Android 16

More updates on Android 16.

We probably will find out more about Android 16 during I/O proper.
Android 16 brings an improved notifications experience. Other than that, it’s more about improving the quality of life. It will have Auracast support, which will make switching between Bluetooth devices easier. It also brings lock screen widgets and a variety of new accessibility improvements.
Google is also expected to showcase capabilities in the latest versions of Android XR, their mixed reality OS, and Wear OS.
Improved Gemini

Android is being spun off into its event, and clearly, Google is making a path for I/O to take on the rest of the company. AI will continue to dominate the conversation at I/O as it did last year (let’s hope Google can make it a little more comprehensible to everyone), with lots of updates for its AI platforms expected to be announced.
Android XR

Google didn’t mention much about Android XR during the Android show, and the show itself focused primarily on the phone-based updates for the platform. We expected to learn more about the company’s latest attempt at a mixed-reality headset in collaboration with Samsung. It could make sense for this to be saved for I/O proper.
Astra Project

In addition to the AI announcements above, Google I/O 2025 should also be a showcase for the progression of Project Astra: that’s the next-level AI assistant that Google was demonstrating this time last year. It’s AI that can ‘see’ the world and is responsive to prompts via voice, video, and more
We might have seen certain aspects of Project Astra roll out to Gemini already, but there is so much more to come.
Google’s ultimate goal with Project Astra is to create assistant technologies that can respond to every type of request, in real time, using natural language, and the team is so excited to see where the technology goes next.
WearOS 6

There are a variety of Wear OS 6 updates ahead of Google I/O 2025, and we can expect many of them to see further releases at the event.
We know the wrist wear software will see the latest Gemini AI app in the future, and it’s going to be getting a visual refresh to match the Material 3 Expressive redesign on Android.
Google I/O 2025 will provide us some demos of Wear OS 6 in action, and — we hope — a launch to look forward to.
With new Pixel and Galaxy watches planned for July and August this year, Google wants to get the software embedded.
Pinterest Rival
One of the last-minute rumors floating around Google I/O 2025 is the launch of a Pinterest-style platform rollout from Google, according to sources.
Google hasn’t had much savor in social media apps, but it has been a while since it has put any real effort behind that kind of thing, so we may see something on May 20.
All sources indicated that, yes, the new app will be based on image search results on Google. This will let users collect different pictures into collections and share the collections with other people. If this is something Google is working on, then Google I/O 2025 is the ideal time to announce it.
Fingers Crossed for Google I/O on May 20th
Google I/O 2025 looks set to be a milestone event focused on advancing AI and refining user experience across platforms. With Android 16 details already partially revealed, the main stage is wide open for deeper dives into Gemini, Astra, and Google’s vision for the future of connected devices.
Whether you’re a developer or just a curious tech fan, this year’s I/O promises exciting updates and a clearer view of how AI will shape Google’s ecosystem moving forward.
