How to Use ‘Edits’: A CapCut Rival for Short Form Video

Meta has officially unveiled a new video-editing app called Edits that is meant to compete directly with ByteDance’s popular CapCut. Edits was announced months after earlier speculation in January that Meta was developing a creator-centric tool, during a brief TikTok ban in the U.S., at which time CapCut was also removed from app stores.

While CapCut is now back online, TikTok’s unclear future in the U.S. opens a window for Meta to lure addicts with its new offering. Edits is available for both iOS and Android and provides creators with a new place to create a short-form video.

Users log in using their Instagram account once downloaded. On the main page, Edits has five tabs:
Ideas – Save reel inspirations and jot down video concepts.
Inspiration – Discover trending audios and popular reels.
Projects – Upload from your camera roll or manage in-progress edits.
Record – Film content directly within the app.
Insights – View analytics like reach, views, and follower growth.
The app connects seamlessly with Instagram, enabling users to flow easily from development to publishing.
CapCut is still a major player in the short-form editing space, but with Edits, Meta offered a more Instagram-native experience that takes into consideration the needs of creators. If TikTok bans are on the horizon, it’s clear that Meta is poised to take the reigns of creator tools.
Whether Edits will be able to compete with CapCut is yet to be determined, but it is already garnering interest from influencers, content marketers, and video editors looking for alternatives within the Meta ecosystem.
This move shows Meta’s strong focus on supporting its creator community and gaining a competitive edge in the social video landscape.
