First Lady Melania Trump has warned Hunter Biden that he could face a $1 billion defamation lawsuit over comments linking her to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
The feud began when Hunter Biden, in an interview with journalist Andrew Callaghan, claimed “Epstein introduced Melania to Trump,” and called the connections “wide and deep.” Hunter Biden said he got that from author Michael Wolff, who is best known for his books on U.S. politics.
Melania Trump’s lawyer, Alejandro Brito, said the comments were “false, defamatory and extremely salacious.” Brito demanded in a legal notice for Hunter Biden to make a public retraction and apology by August 7, 2025.
The letter concluded by saying that if Hunter Biden failed to comply with the demands, the Trumps would sue for damages over $1 billion.
The legal team maintains that the communication caused “significant financial and reputational damage” to Melania Trump. They also charged Biden with taking advantage of the claim “to divert attention to yourself,” which went “to damaging her public image.”
Melania and Donald Trump have long claimed they meet in 1998 from modelling agent Paolo Zampolli during New York Fashion Week – a story she reiterated in her 2024 memoir. The First Lady has denied having any association with Epstein.
If the case goes to court, it could face significant legal hurdles. Both Melania Trump and Hunter Biden are public figures, meaning defamation law would require proof of “actual malice” — that Biden either knew the statement was false or acted with reckless disregard for the truth.
As of now, Hunter Biden has not publicly responded to the legal threat.
